The struggle to downsize

In the conversations we have with people each week, we notice the difficulty in finding an affordable property that suits their needs and will be available when they need it.

In our role as Advisers, we encourage people to think about the future a lot earlier than most would consider. Without this prompting, people will only think about this future aspect of their lives when it is too late.

The second issue is doing it while you still have the time, good health and energy. Depending on health, many people have high energy levels through to their mid-70s. Before that time, they had the finances, the drive, and the energy to make life changes and deal with the emotional and physical challenges associated with relocating.

Also, if you have a partner and can make the move together, it’s a lot easier to settle into a new home, having someone at your side to help with the decisions and to also do things with and meet and make new friends. This is especially so if you are moving away from where you have been established for many years. The time to do this is while you are active, energetic, partnered, and able to take on the challenge.

The third issue facing downsizers is the lack of suitable properties to buy. While downsizing, you are still seeking space for family and friends, especially during the holiday periods. For this reason, a minimum of three bedrooms is required. Then we face the financial issue – the majority of people have most of their future tied up in their current family home and need to sell to release the equity.

Downsizing is not easy and can quickly become overwhelming. However, it can be done and done well if you are willing to do so early and face the change.
